Plot Summary
The movie begins with Dr. Vinayak (Sachin Khedekar), a psychiatrist, returning to his hometown in Maharashtra after a long time. He is accompanied by his wife Gauri (Padmini Kolhapure), who is a classical singer. They are welcomed by Vinayak's uncle Raghunath (Ashok Saraf), who owns a huge mansion called Shree Nivas. Raghunath tells Vinayak that he has inherited the mansion from his ancestors, who were the rulers of the region. He also tells him about the legend of Nagavalli, a dancer who was killed by the king for refusing to marry him. Her spirit is said to haunt the mansion, especially a locked room where her portrait is kept.
Vinayak and Gauri decide to stay in the mansion, despite Raghunath's warnings. Gauri is fascinated by the history and culture of the place, and develops a curiosity about Nagavalli. She manages to open the locked room and sees the portrait of Nagavalli, which resembles her. She also finds a musical instrument called veena, which belonged to Nagavalli. She starts playing it and feels a connection with the dancer. Vinayak notices that Gauri's behavior changes whenever she enters the room. She becomes more confident and assertive, and starts dressing like Nagavalli. She also claims that she is Nagavalli and that she wants to take revenge on the king.
Vinayak realizes that Gauri is suffering from a dissociative identity disorder, where she has adopted the personality of Nagavalli. He tries to cure her with his psychiatric methods, but fails. He then seeks the help of his friend Dr. Rajendra (Makarand Anaspure), who is an expert in paranormal phenomena. Rajendra suggests that they perform an exorcism on Gauri, by making her confront the king's spirit. He also reveals that the king's spirit is none other than Raghunath, who is the reincarnation of the king. Raghunath agrees to participate in the ritual, hoping that it will end the curse on his family.
The exorcism takes place in the locked room, where Gauri as Nagavalli confronts Raghunath as the king. She accuses him of killing her and demands justice. Raghunath apologizes to her and asks for forgiveness. He also tells her that he loved her and wanted to marry her, but she rejected him because she loved someone else. He then reveals that the person she loved was Vinayak, who is the reincarnation of Nagavalli's lover. Gauri is shocked by this revelation and regains her original personality. She hugs Vinayak and cries. The spirits of Nagavalli and the king are finally freed from their bondage and leave the mansion peacefully.
