An Aeria Phone XTM 1.2Ghz/WCDMA mobile phone was handed out to potential participants, with the sample stored in a back-up battery at all times. The study protocol also allowed for participants to change phones between study days. The data were downloaded using the Aeria Cloud servers and uploaded to a private Microsoft Excel workbook. The file format for Aeria cloud files is CSV (comma separated values), meaning that the file can be opened directly in a spreadsheet application. A simple comparison showed that the Aeria Mobile Survey file for the 42MP file could be converted to the CSV file format. However, the file sizes increased significantly, and the results can be edited, saved and exported to simple text files. Thus, for this study the data was uploaded directly to the cloud files using Microsoft Excel as the format of the file is simpler than CSV. A data management plan was developed and documented. Using an Aeria Mobile survey registration sheet, the data were entered into the spreadsheet in segments, with segment headers identified within each column and each row (or survey). All segment headers were formatted with the date and time as the first column of each segment and the Aeria Mobile survey number (sequence number) followed by individual participant as the second column. Some of the data consisted of multiple phone numbers. When this occurred, the segments were split into individual cells in the spreadsheet with a header for the segments. Thus, the data were able to be efficiently viewed and exported for research analyses.
